PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
From the Land:
Landscapes, Still Lifes, Portraits

SAN RAFAEL, CA--July 2, 2007-- Ken Smith, a professional photographer working in the Bay Area for over 20 years, presents more than 80 color and black and white photographs in his one-person show: From the Land: Landscapes, Still Lifes, Portraits. Ken’s unique vision in his landscapes, portraits and still-lifes are a culmination of his interest in scenic design, lighting techniques, still-life model making and alternative photography methods. It is fitting that the exhibit is in the Art Gallery at Toby’s Feed Barn in Point Reyes for included are selected photographs of the local farmers and landscapes from the recent book, Marin Farm Families: Stories and Recipes. Meeting these families, visiting their farms, and exploring the landscape serve as inspiration for Ken’s continuing photographic journeys in Marin County, the Bay Area and beyond.

An early adopter of digital photography, Ken has perfected the art, capturing a broad range of colors and tones, which he then maximizes in the computer darkroom for dramatic effect. The black and white photographs, converted from color digital images, have a unique feel, which challenge the traditional silver print in technical and aesthetic qualities. He also use the infrared spectrum to explore its parallel world of a more ethereal nature, unseen by the human eye, but visible to the infrared camera. His Polaroid transfers include color saturated flowers and allegorical theatrical scenes.

The book, Marin Farm Families: Stories and Recipes, a joint project of the Marin County Community Development Agency’s Countywide Plan and Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT) is for sale at malt.org. Sample photos from the book may be previewed at: kensmithphotography.com/book.html. More of Ken’s art photographs may be seen at: kensmithphotography.com/fineart.html
